Initial Research

In this term, for the project I had gone through brief description on four themes which were "Expressionism"," Earthly Delights", "Bauhaus" and" Mixed Media Arts". At the first time, I decided to choose" Earthly Delights" theme as I always focus on eco friendly architecture which often focus on sustainability. Furthermore, "Earthly Delight" theme defines as the usage of sustainable, recyclable, local and natural elements in Architecture. Then ,during the initial ideas generation and ideas development session, I developed my ideas and planned a "Eco villa" near the Mirissa Beach in Sri Lanka.

What came to my mind when I was planning an "Eco Villa" was "Negah Villa" which the typology was residential and tourist complex. Negah Villa is located in Mazandaran in Iran.  Mohammadreza Norouz was the principal architect who was based on Norouz Design Architecture Studio. The site area was 2200m2 and built area is 350m2. The initial idea behind this built was to create a integration between between indoor and outdoor. The name "Negah" can be translated as "the view". This house has such good view as it was built in a sanctuary. This architectural building is covered with green spaces. This highlights the beauty of the combination of the indoor and outdoor construction. Moreover, the usage of glasses and the balance of the house catched my mind. However, this masterpice gave me many ideas to work on my project such as the the balance between the nature and the built and balance between the indoor and the outdoor.

When, I was researching on this theme and after the initial idea generations secondly ,what came to my mind was "Tropical Modernism" architectural style which is highly utilized in tropical countries. However, when it is about the "Tropical Modernism " architectural style "Geoffrey Bawa" is often discussed as he is one of the pioneer of this architectural style. Geoffery Manning Bawa was a Sri Lankan architect who was inspired by Italian architecture and end up being one of the global recognised architect. Among his masterpieces "Jayawardene House" in Mirissa which was his last project.

                                                                (Goodfellow, 2016)

This name of this project was "Pradeep Jayawardene house" which was made with steel and glass and located on the high red cliff in Mirissa in Sri Lanka. This house was an old holiday bungalow which was burnt down during political issues. This location is located near the Galle- Matara highway and on the red cliff which has a picturesque view. Moreover this site was approximately about 375 meters log private site.  Bawa designed this house in very unique way which could enjoy all the seasons of year. The main section was in rectangular structure which reduces the volume of the house and give a sense of lightness. Below the living room, a small set of walled rooms were built opening on to a tiles courtyard near the garage. Furthermore, in the western two third of the house , an air pavilion is located and the large bedroom is located in the eastern site. The roof covers all area of the house in liner way. The roof spraed towards to the west which allow for water to runoff. Thus, Bawa planned a unique beach holiday house by utilizing "Tropical Architectural Style". Through, the research on this house I got many ideas such as "the Architectural style " and location near " a beach".

Apart from the above architects and designs, "The Jungle House" in Brazil caught my mind due its unique style.

                                                        (ArchDaily, 2020)

"Diana Radomysler"," Samanta Cafardo" were the major architects who worked on this project. The site area was 805m2 . This built is located in the Paulista shore in the region of the Rain Forest and the site is covered with vegetation and has mountainous topography. Furthermore, the objective of this house is to optimize the connection between the nature and architecture. The house is openly located towards the vegetation in order to have a good view. The main area of the house is elevated from the ground and spread towards out of mountain. This part touches the ground only with two pillars. This jungle house is constructed with 3 floors and the ground floor is covered with wooden deck. This part is connected to the children room and and it has 6 bedrooms and with verandas, a swimming pool, living room and a kitchen. Furthermore, on the first floor, the light comes through the tree tops and the view is consisted with the vegetation and the ocean. However, this piece of work was very unique and this developed my ideas more. The usage of wood , the connection between nature and architecture and vegetational and oceanic view of this house caught my mind.

Therefore, these masterpieces directly and indirectly developed my ideas and lead me to create my own plan .

  1. The last sentence is not enough to link this research to your project - it would be a good idea to discuss your ideas in relation to each piece of research in each paragraph. The reason we do research is to find inspiration and look at ways other designers use similar locations or materials or how they use space so we can apply them to our work. You can go back and edit this in your study time.
