Research Post 2 : Tokyo Kindergarten by Tezuka Architects
In this post, I am going to research on the Tokyo Kindergarten which is designed by Tezuka Architects.
Tokyo/ Fuji Kindergarten provides the facility for six hundred children from age two to six which located in Tachikawa suburb of the Tokyo city (Block, 2017). The speciality of this kindergarten is its oval shaped roof deck which functions as a playground for children. However, Takaharu Tezuka who designed this building design the building as multifunctional and continuous building providing learning and playing facilities.
"Because the building is a ring they are looking at each other, there is no sense of a middle. The children learn to be fair to everybody, they learn how to be a part of a nice group"(Block, 2017). According to Deezen, Tezuka has designed this rood in circular as well as in oval shape for children to run around, chase each other and be themselves as children. Moreover, the handrails which in the edge are designed as safety barriers for children and it is around 2.1 meters tall. As, I have researched about the sensory architectural principles, Tezuka also have used the sensory architectural principles very well. For example, the skylights are built in the deck to let the natural lights come n to the building, designed the portholes to let children to peek each others' classrooms, and added five gargoyles to channel rainwater in to water butts and let children to play with rainwater .
Apart from that, it very inspirational because of the way he designed the doors and their placements. He had placed the doors in the ground level as sliding doors to let children to go outside in fine weather. Additionally, in the above image it shows how the building is constructed for the easiness of children. They could play easily, wonder everywhere and the building act as their own world to live freely. I got inspired by his psychological ideology since it very important for the children. The below image showcases the plan view and the planning stage of the kindergarten and how it shows he have planned this building in very concern ways.
Additionally, I have developed my idea in designing the pre school creche thanks to this inspiration as I got inspired by the oval structure. I designed the creche in arch type and curvy shaped building with flat roof. Therefore, this kindergarten played a vital role in brainwashing about the designing. The below image demonstrates how I developed the idea and how I used the idea in to my project brief.
