Initial Visual Research

In this post, I am  going to do a visual research which means I am going to gather images, mood boards which I get inspired from and have more clear ideas about the project. These are few inspirations and information which I gathered. Since the project brief is mostly regarding the children, I am looking forward to research on information regarding kids

Colour psychology

Colour psychology is important in approaching to hues that affect people's emotional and intellectual responses. However, colour plays a vital role in kids' lives . From their toys to their surrounding every things have colours which convey numerous messages through them and it impacts on them in different ways. "Colour psychology is a two-way road; one is your investment to bring a positive change in emotions and  creativity, and the other is your own psychology about colours"(Riya Atray, 2022). For example, kids love to paint walls and they mostly pick colourful food when they eat. Therefore, the colours do impact on their mood, emotions and feelings. Thus, it is important to use suitable colour pallet for kids.

Sensory Architecture

"Sensory design is a holistic approach to crafting experiences that stimulate and engage multiple senses simultaneously"(Belysse, 2024). When it applied to architecture, it is more about how we interact with the surrounding.  Moreover, by incorporating elements that have numerous senses, it conveys multiple emotions and reactions.  For example, flooring can be taken. when we as architect students , we have to careful with flooring materials and have consider the sensory effects which not only for visual appealing but also for functional , comfortable and emotional. The senses in design are sight, sound, touch , smell and taste. when it comes to kids, we have to think about colour pallet carefully regarding sight sense while we have careful with soft flooring which absorbs unwanted noise and but also integrate the intentional sounds. Moreover, we have to be careful with the texture, temperature, materials and good aroma . Apart from that, we have to keep in touch with the sensory design principles which are important in designing for the target market. It is essential to research the human perception and cognition, allow the flexibility and adoptability and avoiding the overload. Thus, it is essential in researching about the user and their sensory safety.

                                            (www.vertisbuildings.com, n.d.)

As an architect student I can think about more strategies which I can follow in order to have a pleasant surrounding for kids with a sensory safety. For example, it is better to use organic, curvilinear forms and curvy edges instead of sharp edges, usage of diffusers and colour filters , good building layout, increasing the personal spaces such as corridors and breakout spaces and limitation of textured flooring,  walling and furniture.

The bellow images are few examples for sensory safety materials.

Comments

  1. You have added further images and looked at sensory architecture, but don't discuss the images or how they might impact your design. I'd like you to look at this in more detail when designing the outdoor play area, post on it and come up with some concept sketches for this area.
